David Reaston is a guitarist and composer from Mackay, Queensland. The cut and splice, internal reference, and sonic blasts of his 10 Guitar Project, combined with his work with Song Fwaa and others, reflect a practice that moves fluidly between composition and improvisation. He was awarded his PhD from the University of Sydney in 2019. Since 2017, he has been based at CQUniversity, where he is a Lecturer in Music and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Reaston has released and contributed to numerous recordings spanning jazz, experimental music, contemporary composition, and independent artists. His music has been described as “other-worldly” (Jazz Local 32) and “individual and fresh” (The Music Trust), while critics have referred to him as a “madman/prophet” (Sydney Morning Herald) and a “dazzling technician” (Cadence Magazine, USA). His guitar playing has been praised for its “signature sound” (Alternative Media Group), demonstrating “great technique and a very different sensibility” (Canberra Jazz Blog).
